David Gottsegen, MD, ABMH
For the last 25 years, David has been a practicing pediatrician
in Western Massacchusetts. He completed four years of training
in family practice and pediatrics in Duluth and in the twin cities
of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. There, he had the good
fortune to meet two of his mentors Dan Kohen and Karen Olness,
who introduced him to the world of clinical hypnosis.
Dave continued his training in hypnosis with Drs Olness and
Kohen and the rest of the world class faculty at the Society of Developmental
and Behavioral Pediatrics and the workshops of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH).
Dave was certified by ASCH ten years ago, and since then has attained consultant status, and has taught at workshops at ASCH's annual meetings, and at the annual meeting of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He became a Diplomate of the American Board in Medical Hypnosis in 2008. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics's section on complementary, herbal and integrative medicine.
Dave has opened a consulting practice in clinical hypnosis, as well as continuing his work at Holyoke Pediatric Associates in Massachusetts where he is a community pediatrician, stressing holistic care, and "the hypnosis in the encounter”. He sees consults referred from other pediatricians, pediatric specialists, and mental health specialists. Dave teaches children, teens, and young adults hypnosis skills to help them help themselves with chronic pain syndromes, such as headaches and stomachaches, habit disorders, including bedwetting and tics, sleep disorders, and anxiety disorders. Dave has written about hypnosis for enuresis and abdominal pain, and has been involved in research on the use of guided imagery to help children who undergo surgery.
When Dave is not in the office, he enjoys dancing with his wife, Shelly - a skilled therapist with whom he shares some patients, and from whom he continues to learn. Dave has two wonderful children, Jessica and Liza, and two active dogs, Blue and Jazz. Together, they enjoy hiking, camping, cross country skiing, and the outdoors, in general in their lovely corner of New England. Other interests have included jazz, photography, social action, and canine agility training.
